The Prescott Fire Department is informing residents that, starting Jan. 1, 2026, all homes with fuel-burning appliances, fireplaces, or attached garages must have carbon monoxide (CO) alarms on every level of their home and near all sleeping areas. The update to the Ontario Fire Code aims to protect families from the dangers of carbon monoxide, a colourless, odourless gas that can be fatal if undetected.

The new Ontario Fire Code requirements apply to home that have any of the following:

  • A fuel-burning appliance (furnace, water heater, gas stove or wood stove)
  • A wood or gas burning fireplace
  • An attached garage
  • NEW: Heated air supplied by a fuel-burning appliance located outside the home. Examples include: outdoor wood furnace (wood boiler), pellet stove in a detached utility building, propane or natural gas furnace in an outbuilding, or external boiler system connected to home heating.

As required by the Ontario Fire Code, CO alarms must be installed:

  • Near every sleeping area, and
  • NEW: on every storey of the home including floors without bedrooms
  • This applies to detached homes, townhouses, and rowhouses

CO poisoning is preventable with a working alarm!

OPEN HOUSE EVENT – SATURDAY OCTOBER 4TH, 2025

Prescott Fire Department is excited to host our annual Open House on Saturday October 4th, 2025, from 10:00 am - 1:00 pm to help kick off Fire Prevention week.  Enjoy a family barbeque, tours of the fire hall, fire safety demonstrations and more. FIRE PREVENTION WEEK, OCTOBER 5 – 11, 2025

Join us in celebrating Fire Prevention Week! This year's campaign, "Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home" works to educate our community about using these batteries safely.

From smartphones and laptops to power tools and toys, lithium-ion batteries are everywhere – and while convenient, they can pose a fire risk if not used or disposed of safely.

The Prescott Fire Department wants to stress how important it is to BUY certified products, CHARGE devices properly, and RECYCLE batteries at safe drop-off locations when it comes to lithium-ion batteries.

CHARGE INTO FIRE SAFETY:  3 STEPS

  1. Buy only listed products. When buying a product that uses a lithium-ion battery, look for a safety certification mark such as UL, ETL, or CSA. This means it meets important safety standards.
  2. Charge devices safely. Always use the cords that came with the product to charge. Follow the instructions from the manufacturer. Buy new chargers from the manufacturer or one that the manufacturer has approved. Charge your device on a hard surface. Don’t overcharge your device. Unplug it or remove the battery when it’s fully charged.
  3. Recycle batteries responsibly. Don’t throw lithium-ion batteries in the trash or regular recycling bins because they could start a fire. Recycle your device or battery at a safe battery recycling location.
