Water Tower Demolition Update

This is intended to provide residents with information regarding the water tower demolition.

Was a resident hit by a piece of concrete?

The concrete is sprayed with water to reduce the production of dust while they are chipping away the concrete. It was a glob of watery dust (slurry) that fell onto the resident's shirt while they were speaking with a demolition crew worker and not a piece of concrete.

Why is the project taking so long?

The demolition contractor was originally intending on using a high reach excavator to remove the base of the bowl which would have gone much quicker.

The concrete on the stem of the tower is 8 inches thick, and the base of the bowl is 6 feet thick. Based on an engineering review and required method of removal, the use of a high-reach excavator to remove the base of the bowl presented a risk of the stem not being able to withstand the higher-powered equipment. They instead had to shift to using the mini excavators to remove the base of the bowl which is considerably more time consuming.

How much longer is it going to take?

It is taking approximately 1.5 weeks to remove each quarter of the base of the bowl. Half of the base of the bowl has been demolished, and the third quarter is being worked on. It is expected that the remaining amount will take until late November.

Once the base of the bowl has been completed, they will then be able to use the high reach excavator to remove the remaining stem of the tower where the pieces will fall into the stem of the tower. This is similar to how the concrete was managed at the top of the bowl. This should take about 2 weeks to remove the stem of the tower.

What about damage to neighbouring properties?

There are spotters on site to watch for any falling debris. Property owners are talked to immediately when damage occurs. Any damage will be repaired. Additional construction fencing is being used to create an increased buffer zone to keep residents away from the tower demolition site.
